Constructed between 1639 and 1648, the Red Fort was the main residence of the Mughal Emperors who ruled parts of India, and later much of the subcontinent from 1526 until the 1850s. The Red Fort is the largest historical monument in Delhi and attracts thousands of annual visitors. Each year on Indian Independence Day, the prime minister gives a speech broadcast from the Red Fort.
Discover a world of wonders at the Dilli Haat Market, an open-air market with over 60 vendors selling a variety of goods and handicrafts, including fabrics, beads, rosewood and sandlewood carvings, art, pottery and more. The market includes a mix of permanent and rotating vendors, who come from throughout India to sell their goods. You can find something unique every time you go.
Located in the city of Agra, just a few hours from Delhi, the Taj Mahal is one of India’s most iconic pieces of architecture. This white marble mausoleum was built to house the tomb of Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan’s favourite wife, who died in 1631, and is also his resting place. The Taj Mahal is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and welcomes over 8 million visitors each year to explore this incredible and ornate example of Mughal architecture.
Delhi’s National Zoological Park sits in a 176-acre park in the heart of the city. The Zoo is home to around 1350 animals from around the world, including many local animals that are native to India and south Asia. The Zoo has a breeding program focused on conservation of key endangered species like the royal Bengal tiger, Asiatic lion, Indian Rhinoceros, swamp deer, and more.
Established in 1921, India Gate stands as a war memorial to more than 70,000 British Indian Army soldiers who died in the first World War and the Third Anglo-Afghan War. In 1972, after the Indo-Pakistani War, an additional marble pedestal was added to commemorate unknown soldiers who died invading Pakistan.
The Jama Masjid mosque is another architectural wonder build by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. The mosque, the biggest in India, is a stunning mix of white marble and red sandstone and decorated with intricate designs. The mosque is open to tourists daily, but between noon and 1:30 pm it is closed to tourism and only open for prayers. Around 25,000 people can fit in the courtyard of the Jama Masjid.
Another amazing architectural wonder from the Mughal Empire and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Humayun’s Tomb, designed by Persian architects is where the second Mughal Emperor, Humayun is buried, along with first wife, Empress Bega Begum, and over 150 other Mughal family members. This was the first garden tomb on the Indian subcontinent and is thought to have inspired the Taj Mahal.
