Toronto vs Vancouver: What Sets Them Apart

1. Weather is somehow similar but significantly different

Winter in Toronto can be tougher than in Vancouver because of the big amounts of snow and the sub-zero temperature they reach during winter time, compared to the mild and rainy weather in Vancouver. Both have really warm summers. Yes, Canada is not cold all year-long. But in Vancouver we experience a really dry hot summer, whereas Toronto’s summer is more humid and hot. I have experienced both and probably I have enjoyed the seasons in Vancouver more than in Toronto.

2. Looking for great activities to do?

That’s right, Toronto is well known for having a great night life while Vancouver´s lifestyle is a bit quieter perhaps. If you love parties, festivals, and free stuff during events in a wide amount of places to go, both cities can offer that, although Toronto offers more options. But something very unique and special from this beautiful area of British Columbia is the outdoors activities. It’s a totally different experience to go to these amazing mountains that surround Vancity during the four different seasons. Hiking, cycling, exploring! That’s something I can assure that everyone will love.

3. Cost of living, cheap or expensive?

This is a typical question I get asked all the time: which city is more expensive? My answer will always be the same: it depends. The amount of money you spend depends on you and the places you go to but, generally speaking, in some aspects, the area of British Columbia is more expensive than Ontario. They both offer great services, amazing food (I can tell, I have been gaining a lot of weight since I arrived) and overall, is a great safe place to live.

4. Public transit 

I love this one, honestly, even though I complain quite regularly about it the public transit is really good. If you are planning to live in Toronto you would use the subway, buses, and streetcars (the new ones are great!) while in Vancouver we have the regular buses and the Skytrain which is exactly like the subway but above the earth. While you are on your way to school or work you can see the mountains, buildings, lakes etc. I love it.

5. Multicultural cities

Another question I have been asked is about the people here. No, Canadians are not only white people. In fact, especially in these two beautiful cities the different cultures you can find are insanely varied. I have met so many people from all over the world and even if you meet a Canadian, his/her will likely be from somewhere else or is a second or third generation of immigrants. Rich in multiculturalism, you must be careful because every person is different and you cannot expect everybody to treat you the same. I believe diversity is bigger in Toronto than in Vancouver, there´s more Asian population in Vancouver than in Toronto but diversity is always great!
