Finding the Right Accommodation Option

The part of studying abroad that always makes me a little anxious is finding a place to stay. I have stayed with a host family, a roommate, and also lived by myself. Each of these experiences taught me to make better choices the next time I would have to stay abroad. We are all different and it’s not always easy to find the type of accommodation which suits us best.  In order to make choices which best fit us, it’s important to consider what we are looking to gain from the experience, our preferences and our personalities.  To make this as easy as possible, I would like to share the different types of accommodations options with you.

Types of Accommodations Options

Residences

During the summer (May to August), students can access safe, convenient, and affordable residence accommodations with common areas, meals, internet, and other amenities. Greystone College offers the residences option for both short- and long-term stays, making it easy for students to focus on their studies while enjoying a comfortable living environment.

Bed and Breakfast Places

Similar to hotels, Bed and Breakfast places can feel as though you’re living in a guest house. They are a good option if you are looking for accommodations for a short stay, a place to organize your personal items and a place to sleep at the end of the day.  Rates may vary depending on location, services included, and the time of year. Airbnb is a useful app for reading reviews from previous guests and to find the best rates.

Homestay

Homestay is a great option if you are looking to share your experience with a host family and learn about local culture. Homestay is a family home where a monthly fee is paid for a room with, or without, meals. Students live with the family for the duration of their contract with the institution and, if they are not comfortable, may request to move. I recommend this option because Homestay offers great opportunities for an open-minded experience; it was through my Homestay experience that my English improved, and it also helped ease my feelings of homesickness. At Greystone College, students have the option to participate in Homestay, providing a supportive environment to practice English and immerse themselves in Canadian culture.

Hostels

Hostel prices are dependent on the number of people sharing a room. I am particular about my own space so Hostels are something I would experience only on a short trip with friends.  It’s a good option if you are looking for a place where you can make new friends from all over the world.

Apartments

I have been living in an apartment for the past 9 months. It’s very convenient to have my own space but apartments also have their challenges:  dirt won’t magically clean itself and there are bills to pay. Usually, the terms of a lease range from 6 to 12 months.  To get approval, proof of income must be provided.  The contract might stipulate first and last month’s rent must be paid at the time the lease is signed.  You can share the cost of an apartment if you are willing to share it with a roommate.

Accommodation is among the most important aspects to consider for an exceptional study experience. Be mindful of your comfort zone, as the mood in which you awaken can set a positive or negative tone for the rest of the day. At Greystone College, students have access to guidance and resources to help them choose accommodations that support both their comfort and overall success while studying in Canada.
