Students will take English Foundation and English Communication CORE classes with other students in the 30 plus age group. Depending on your schedule and level, you can choose from ILSC’s wide variety of SKILLS classes to create a flexible and unique program. Skills classes listed are a selection of sample options – availability varies depending on student enrollment and different courses may be available when you study at ILSC.

English Communication focuses on improving your general communicative ability in English for everyday communication. The course has a strong focus on listening and speaking skills, as well as, reading and writing skills with integrated grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary. In English Communication, you will improve your:
- - confidence communicating in English in a variety of everyday situations in small group activities and lively classroom discussions
- - conversation and presentation strategies
- - speaking fluency and accuracy
- - listening, speaking, reading and writing skills with integrated grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary
- - productive grammar and functions in daily use

English Foundation focuses on the core language skills you need for a solid English foundation. You will develop communicative ability in English, including core listening, speaking, reading and writing, grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary. In the English Foundation course, you will improve your:
- - Confidence communicating in English in a variety of everyday situations
- - Speaking fluency and accuracy
- - Listening, reading and speaking for daily communication, discussions and presentations

- - Grammar and vocabulary
Expand your knowledge and use of academic vocabulary. The Academic Vocabulary course covers the most useful and frequently used academic vocabulary found in academic settings. Practice and review new vocabulary using a variety of activities including speaking, discussions, writing sentences/paragraphs, reading, and quizzes.
Academic Writing focuses on the writing skills needed to succeed in college or university. You will practice and develop essay writing, summaries, short answer paragraphs, lecture notes, research and academic discussion skills.
Improve your interview skills, in person, online and over the phone. The course will help you focus on your employment goals, practice interview techniques and develop profession-specific English vocabulary. You will be videotaped and critiqued to improve your professional presentation, pronunciation and language skills.
Improve your speaking fluency! You will learn useful English phrases for conversations on a wide variety of interesting topics. You will build your speaking confidence as you learn new conversation skills and strategies.
Learn how to present your opinions and discuss them with other students. Debating will build your speaking fluency, note-taking, critical thinking and listening skills. You will have fun learning how to debate on a wide variety of interesting topics.
The tourism industry is one of the world's largest employers. This interactive course helps you master industry-related English language skills needed in hospitality jobs such as hotels, catering and concierge. You will have the opportunity to practice a wide range of tasks and functions typical of work in the hospitality industry, such as managing phone calls and correspondence, offering advice on attractions and solving customer service problems.
Explore the language of art, art critique and art production. Practise and improve your English speaking, listening, writing and vocabulary skills through drawing, painting, writing in a creative journal and visiting art exhibits around the city. No previous art experience is necessary.
Improve your listening, speaking, vocabulary and pronunciation while watching English films. You will learning authentic English vocabulary and idioms, practice natural pronunciation. You can discuss your favourite films, stars and learn about cinematic techniques. You will read and write movie reviews, and discuss culture and ideas presented in films.
Develop your English writing, reading, listening and speaking skills while exploring social media site and its various applications for business, politics and personal use. You will learn how social media is changing our world through examining case-studies, and participating in class discussions and a group project.
Develop your English language skills, and language learning strategies while you explore Toronto’s history, historical buildings, churches, neighbourhoods and civilization, both in and outside of the classroom. Learn about and experience Toronto history through readings, videos, and field trips. The course will include written and oral assignments so that you’ll be able to put your language learning into practice and track your progress in the course.
In this course, you will develop English listening and vocabulary skills as you learn to follow physical instructions accurately. You will learn and use the vocabulary of anatomy and movement. You will also gain physical strength, flexibility and stress management skills.
IELTS Speaking and Listening will provide you with focused practice on the IELTS listening and speaking modules. The course will guide you through the speaking and listening test modules and focuses on the skills and test-taking strategies for each question type. The IELTS Listening and Speaking course covers:

The IELTS skills course will help prepare you for the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) exam. Each class will cover one of the four test modules: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. In this course, you will have the opportunity to specifically target each macro-skill, as well as develop grammar, academic vocabulary and writing skills to reach your target IELTS band score. Additionally, you will become familiar with the structure, requirements, question and text types of the IELTS test.
Many students find the IELTS writing module the most challenging to achieve the desired band score. The IELTS Writing course will provide you with focused preparation for the IELTS Writing module. In this course, you will work step-by-step through each writing task. You can examine in detail the key strategies for success. You will develop writing and language skills to achieve higher scores on the writing module. The IELTS Writing course covers:

Public Speaking & Listening with TED Talks helps students master the skills of effective public speaking. Students model the preparation and delivery of presentations on TED Talks, the best public presentations in the world today. Students learn how to organise a speech, how to create slides to support their speech and how to deliver it effectively. During the course, students will have the opportunity to develop critical thinking and communication skills, as well as train their listening skills, build fluency and confidence and improve all aspects of pronunciation to take their speaking to the next level.
Explore and discuss global events and keep pace with today's changing political climate. Improve English speaking, reading, writing and listening skills through discussions and debates on world events such as politics, economics and law. All in Instructional resources for this course are authentic and include television, video and the Internet.
Improve your pronunciation and clarity speaking English. In the Pronunciation class, there are a wide variety of activities to improve your pronunciation of words, sentence stress, accent and intonation.
Improve your reading comprehension, speed, skills and vocabulary. In the Reading Skills class you can read about real-world topics and develop reading skills with a variety of activities.
