Language Entry Requirements for International Students

When you apply to Greystone College, you'll be able to take our FREE ILSC Academic English Placement Test to determine your ILSC English language level. Students who do not yet meet the language entry requirement can create a package program that starts with studies at ILSC Language Schools.

For programs offered in English, international students or students whose first language is not English must demonstrate language proficiency by providing proof of one of the following:

  • ILSC Academic English Placement Test – may be taken by applicants who have not taken an approved external English language proficiency test, the test results have expired or do not meet the program requirements.
  • External assessment – English language level equivalencies for common tests such as IELTS and TOEFL iBT are listed below. Results will be accepted provided that they are submitted within the 2-year expiration period (from the issue/test date up to program enrollment date). For any further inquiries about approved language tests, please contact the Admissions team.
  • Alternative English proficiency – Exemptions may be granted to international students who have completed a minimum of three years of full-time study in a recognized post-secondary institution where English is the official language of instruction and examination, and they can provide a proof of studies. The three years of post-secondary study must be completed within ten years of attending Greystone College.

Visa Information for International Students

All international students who plan to study at Greystone College Canada must have valid status in Canada upon arrival and throughout their studies. For most students this means obtaining a study permit (and possibly a Co-op work permit), or for short-term programs, a visitor visa or eTA. For your reference, we’ve provided information about the most common permits and visas that our students require below.

IMPORTANT: The following is general information. All visa regulations are determined by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and are subject to change. Please always verify visa information on the IRCC website, or with your nearest Canadian Embassy, Consulate or Visa Application Centre (VAC).

International students who wish to study in Canada for 6 months or less may need a Temporary Resident Visa (Visitor Visa) or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to enter Canada, depending on the country for which they hold a passport. To see if this applies to you, please check the list of countries and territories whose citizens require visas and eTAs in order to enter Canada as visitors.

If your program lasts 6 months or longer, a study permit is required; however, in certain circumstances, you may want to apply for a Study Permit even if you are going to study for less than 6 months. You can apply for your study permit online or through your nearest Canadian embassy, consulate, or visa application centre (VAC). Learn more about the process of applying for a study permit.

When you apply for your study permit, you will need to include the Designated Learning Institute (DLI) number for your chosen Greystone College location:

  • Greystone College Vancouver DLI: O19352522932
  • Greystone College Toronto DLI: O19376982302
  • College Greystone Montréal DLI: O256818010442

Off-campus work rights: If you are studying 6 months or more, your study permit may include a condition that allows you to work off-campus during your full-time study program, and during scheduled breaks. Learn more about off campus work during your studies.

A Co-op work permit is required for all students who register for a Co-op or practicum program at Greystone College. The Co-op work permit is required for you to complete the mandatory paid or unpaid work portion of your program. The Co-op work permit is separate from the off-campus work rights that may be included on your study permit.

Greystone College Canada, along with our partner Encubate Inc., an authorized Canadian Immigration Consulting firm, offers free support to Co-op and practicum students to apply for their Co-op work permit upon arrival.

Students who complete some programs at Greystone College Canada and then transfer their credits for advanced standing in programs at our private and public education partners may be eligible to apply for a PGWP upon completion of their program at the partner institution.

In addition to the pathway a PGWP provides, students in Canada have access to work permits through a variety of Canadian government programs. Greystone College has partnered with Encubate Inc., an authorized Canadian Immigration Consulting firm to provide Greystone College students with the knowledge and knowhow regarding how to access these programs along with a variety of supportive free and paid visa consulting services. Learn more about our Visa and Immigration Services.

Greystone College students are required to maintain valid status in Canada and adhere to all of the requirements attached to their particular permit(s) or visa.

As Designated Learning Institutions, each Greystone College School is obligated to report to Immigration, Citizenship and Refugees Canada on the academic status of all students who have our schools’ DLIs listed on their study permits.
