ILSC English Level Equivalencies

ILSC offers a wide range of courses at 10 progressive language levels: from Beginner 1 (B1) to Advanced 2 (A2) / Mastery 2 (M2).

ILSC's core courses are typically offered at all 10 levels, while afternoon skills courses often combine students from two successive levels, allowing them to share their strengths and skills with other students.

The range of tests listed varies greatly in design, purpose, and format. This chart is intended to serve only as a guideline of test scores and ILSC and ELS levels and may not apply equally to every individual.

Common European Framework (CEFR): A1

ILSC Level Beginner 1: A student at this level can:

  • understand and communicate very basic personal information using a few common, familiar words and simple phrases. 

  • make simple requests, give short, very simple instructions, and ask and answer simple questions about oneself.

  • read and write basic personal information.

Equivalent Test Scores 

Common European Framework (CEFR): A1+

ILSC Level Beginner 2: A student at this level can:

  • understand and communicate basic personal information using simple phrases and short, simple sentences about personal needs and experiences.

  • make simple requests, give short, simple instructions, and ask and answer basic questions about oneself.

  • read and write simple sentences about highly familiar information. 


Equivalent Test Scores 

Common European Framework (CEFR): A2

ILSC Level Beginner 3: A student at this level can:

  • understand and communicate basic information using formulaic phrases and simple sentences about immediate needs and personal experiences.

  • have very short, simple social conversations and describe things, people, and situations in a few short sentences.

  • read and write simple sentences about familiar information.

Common European Framework (CEFR): A2+

ILSC Level Beginner 4: A student at this level can:

  • understand and communicate information about common topics of personal relevance, everyday activities, experiences, wants, and needs.

  • have short, casual social conversations; give simple information about needs or feelings; and describe personal experiences and situations.

  • read and write short, simple texts about personal experiences, everyday activities, and familiar topics.

ILSC Level Intermediate 1: A student at this level can:

  • understand and communicate in short, routine social situations and present concrete information about needs and familiar topics.

  • participate in routine social conversations and agree, disagree, and give opinions in discussions.

  • read and write simple to moderately complex descriptions, narrations, and communications about familiar topics.

Common European Framework (CEFR): B1+

ILSC Level Intermediate 2: A student at this level can:

  • understand and communicate with some confidence in routine social situations.  

  • present concrete information in some detail about familiar topics of personal relevance.

  • participate in routine social conversations and ask for and give information and opinions in some detail. Read and write moderately complex descriptions, narrations, and communications about familiar topics.

ILSC Level Intermediate 3: A student at this level can:

  • understand and communicate with some confidence in many daily routine social, educational, and work situations.

  • present concrete and some abstract information on an expanding range of familiar topics.

  • participate in less routine social conversations; give detailed information and give extended suggestions, recommendations, or advice.

  • read and write clear, moderately complex texts on familiar topics.

ILSC Level Intermediate 4: A student at this level can:

  • understand and communicate with confidence in most daily routine social, educational, and work situations.

  • present concrete and some abstract information on an expanded range of familiar topics.

  • participate in less routine social conversations, give detailed information, and propose or recommend solutions to problems.

  • read and write clear, moderately complex texts on familiar and some abstract topics.

ILSC Level Advanced 1: A student at this level can:

  • understand and communicate with some confidence on a broad range of demanding topics in non-routine work, educational, and social situations.

  • present information about complex, abstract, and general topics.

  • participate effectively in a range of personal, academic, and professional situations, expressing ideas, opinions, and attitudes with flexibility and precision.

  • read and write complex formal and informal texts for a range of purposes.

ILSC Level Advanced 2: A student at this level can:

  • understand and communicate with confidence on a broad range of demanding topics in non-routine work, educational, and social situations. 

  • present information about complex, abstract, and general topics.

  • participate confidently and effectively in a wide range of personal, academic, and professional situations, adapting language appropriately for different audiences, purposes, and contexts.

  • read and write complex formal and informal texts for a wide range of purposes.
