In a competition that combined passion for learning with purpose, ILSC and Greystone College Australia proudly secured 2nd place overall in this year’s Duolingo Australia and New Zealand Language Challenge, standing out among 92 institutions across regions. Even more inspiring, ILSC Brisbane teacher Katie MacDonald won as the national champion, proving that a love for languages can make a real difference in people’s lives.

More than 730 participants joined this year’s challenge, including over 100 staff from ILSC and Greystone College Australia. Together, they logged 10,000 hours of study.

ILSC earned the highest XP per person among all institutions—a big win considering the competition included major universities and language providers. Seven ILSC participants even made it into the national top 12, showing how deeply the ILSC community embraces learning, teamwork, and a little friendly competition.

Katie, a Lover of Languages

At the heart of ILSC’s success story is Katie MacDonald, a dedicated English teacher from ILSC Brisbane whose love of language goes beyond academics. Known for her curiosity and creativity, Katie has always seen language learning as a bridge to connect people, ideas, and cultures.

When asked about what keeps her motivated, Katie shared that she finds joy in exploring new ways to communicate and understand others. “It wasn’t always easy, but my lifelong love of languages helped me keep going. And when I realized there was a generous charity donation at stake, that really motivated me—especially on days when I was struggling with Latin verb endings,” shared Katie in an interview with Duolingo. That mindset carried her through the Duolingo Challenge, where she completed lessons daily, steadily climbing the ranks until she became the national champion.

Turning a Win into Something Bigger

As the national champion, Katie received $5,000 to donate to a charity of her choice. Without hesitation, she chose Orange Sky, a Brisbane-based charity that provides mobile laundry, showers, and support for people experiencing homelessness.

“With Orange Sky, it’s $24 for someone to have a shower, wash their clothes, and also get some support,” Katie shared. “So that’s about 208 people with this $5,000.”

Her donation turned hours of language practice into something life-changing for those in need. It was a powerful reminder that learning can ripple far beyond the classroom.

For everyone at ILSC, the Duolingo Language Challenge was a chance to experience what language learners feel every day, from growth and connection to the joy of discovering something new.

Katie’s story reminds us that language connects people through empathy, understanding, and kindness. For ILSC, this win celebrates the spirit of learning that brings people together and inspires them to make a difference.
