“It’s the Inside That Counts” But Sometimes, the Outside Helps

A person with their thumb up

We often hear that it’s what’s on the inside that matters most—but in professional and academic settings, first impressions still play an important role. From how we present ourselves to how we communicate, the “outside” can influence confidence, credibility, and opportunities. This post explores why external presentation can support what you already bring to the table, and how aligning both can help you succeed.

From the first time you meet someone new, that person is already starting to paint a mental image of you. Although this impression may not be accurate, it can certainly affect the way they think about you and how they interact.

Research shows that 55% of a good first impression is built on appearance. Appropriately dressing for a Career Fair is the first step that could lead to a job interview. But, is there a perfect formula on how to dress for a Career Fair? Your best bet is to consider what all the employers you’re interested in might think about the way you’re presenting yourself. How would you feel if an office staff wore flip-flops? Yes, that is how the employer would feel too!

Let’s look at some tips to help you achieve this goal:

– Hair: it should be neatly trimmed or brushed
– Beard: groomed
Make up: light, natural
– Hats: big no-no! (unless it is for medical or religious reasons)
– Perfume/cologne: it’s best to use a discrete perfume, or not use at all
– Shirt/pants: clean and pressed
– Skirt/dress: knee length
*Always avoid: flip flops, t-shirts, tank tops, shorts, running shoes

Ready to dress for success now? While properly dressing is one the main things to consider when attending a Career Fair, please also think about your online presence!

While skills, values, and experience are the foundation of success, presentation can help those strengths shine. When appearance, communication, and confidence work together, they create stronger first impressions and clearer connections. Through career-focused learning at Greystone College, students develop both the professional skills and self-awareness needed to present themselves with confidence—inside and out.
