Winner of ILSC’s My USA Dream contest, Andrea Prado Szabo, sat down with us after arriving in New York and shared her journey from studying at university in Venezuela, to winning a 4 week scholarship to study at ILSC-New York!
I’m 26 years old and I’m from Caracas, Venezuela but I am also Hungarian descendant. I finished my studies in Chemical Engineering at Central University of Venezuela (UCV) two years ago. Since I was graduated I wanted to travel and live new experiences like living in a new country for a while, meeting new people and learning a new language. That’s why I moved to Toronto, Canada for 3 months to study English at ILSC-Toronto and so far it has been one of the best experience I’ve ever lived.
One day I was exploring Facebook, as usual, and I realized that ILSC-Toronto was posting a contest related to New York and of course I got really excited and I participated. I was in NY when I was 21 and I always wanted to live there, so for me wining that prize would be like my dream come true, even if it was going to be for only one month.
Winning ILSC’s #MyUSAdream contest
At the first moment [when I found out I won] I couldn’t believe it. After I got the email with the news, I went to the ILSC’s office to ask about it and they confirmed it. I was the real winner. OMG! I felt more than happy, I called my mom, my sister and told all my friends to let them know what was going on. I felt really satisfied being the winner of such an amazing prize, finally my dream has come true.
Arriving in New York
Yes, I am finally here! Beside the weather, that I definitely can handle, I’ve had a wonderful time. I’ve met new friends who are such nice people, as well as great teachers. About the city, in one word, AMAZING! And my best experience so far was New Year’s Eve. Although I didn’t spend the day in Times Square, as everybody does, I went to Williamsburg with some friends and it was awesome. Definitely a day that I will never forget.
First impressions of ILSC-New York
Everything has been great so far. I’m really enjoying my classes, learning something new every day. The school is really nice, I love my classrooms and classmates. My classes are very dynamic. I hope I can achieve my main goal at the end of the session which is to improve my speaking fluency in English.
My advice to other students
I would say, PLEASY TRY IT! Living in a new country even if it is for a short time, it’s a wonderful and unforgettable experience. Studying a new language overseas allows you to meet so many people, cultures and places. It also gives you a tool to communicate with the world, it’s an open window.
