ILSC Language Schools students taking Communication or English for Academic Purposes (formerly Academic Preparation) will now receive their very own ILSC textbooks! ILSC collaborated with Oxford University Press to create a set of textbooks organized according to ILSC language levels. Students in the Beginner levels will use our Foundation books that cover basic language skills including listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading, writing, vocabulary and grammar. In Intermediate and Advanced levels, there are two different streams of books available. Both support students with vocabulary, grammar, and critical thinking. In addition, the English Communication books focus on listening, speaking and pronunciation, while the English for Academic Purposes books focus on reading and writing.
We took some photos and interviewed some of ILSC’s instructors recently when we handed out the very first ILSC textbooks. Check out what some of our teachers had to say:
Monique Loland, Communication Class Instructor:
Q) How do you feel about the new ILSC Student Books?
I’m absolutely excited about the new textbooks. It’s great for the students to have their own copies, it’s more professional and the students are really happy to have their own reference books to refer to.
Q) How will it change the way you teach?
I think the books will help us be more student-centred. The students will have their own copies, they can look through the material, and they can give feedback on what they like and don’t like. They’ll be able spend more time actually reviewing the material in advance, and I think we’ll be able to spend the class time more usefully overall.
Joe Tschanz, Communication Class Instructor:
Q) How are the new textbooks going to change the way you teach?
They’re going to help us to be a lot more student-centred. They’re going to add more a lot more structure to the course, and definitely help us to teach things that really matter and that will benefit and help our students improve in every way possible.
Q) Can you tell us a bit about the content in the books?
They’ve done a really good job of choosing topics that students would actually care about, and that are relevant to their lifestyle and to things that they would use in their everyday life and not just in the classroom.
Q) How do you think the students will feel about the new books?
It’s going to be so much easier for students because it will connect them with other students in the school who are taking the same class, because now, every teacher will use the same curriculum, the same books.
Everyone at ILSC is excited about the new books, and another perk that Joe pointed out is that the books “will be a lot more environmentally friendly because we don’t have to use so many photocopies.” Good for the planet, good for the instructors, and great for the students, we think these new books will support amazing language learning experiences at ILSC!
