Learn to Earn New-Delhi, June Report

Hello everyone!

My name is Priyanka and I am the new Social Programs Coordinator at ILSC‐New Delhi. I started working at ILSC from May 2011 and it was at this time that I first had contact with the Learn to Earn (LTE) program. During my first week of orientation and training, I went in and observed several English classes where the girls were studying and it was so wonderful to see them learning English with such a diverse class of students. After observing these lessons, I can say that the style of teaching is very different from the regular Indian method that most of us are used to and this “Canadian approach” of student-centeredness, and guided discovery in class is very beneficial to them.

Now we are back to the process of recruiting new candidates for the year 2011, and we are off to an exciting start! We have revised the criteria for selection from last year in order to maximize the experience for the brightest and most ambitious girls. Our new criteria are:

  • Age 16 to 25
  • Preferably unmarried
  • Disadvantaged background
  • Motivated and dedicated attitude
  • *Minimum Grade 8 education (new criteria)
  • *Literate in Hindi, or their mother tongue (new criteria)
  • *Some basic knowledge of English (new criteria)

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
A number of organizations have been a great help in providing us potential candidates. It did prove to be a little logistically difficult as many organizations catering to needy girls have their shelter homes in the outskirts of Delhi. The ILSC campus seems far for them and the money that we are offering as transport allowance is quite less as compared to the distance. I am still in conversation with few of them and will surely find a way to sort it out in future batches. Some organizations were close enough to our centre and were ready to help us in finding the deserving candidates, including the Pardada Pardadi Educational Society (PPES), and Aarohan.

We conducted interviews in Hindi and set out English language level assessment tests for the 15 girls on Tuesday, June 1st. We could see that many of these girls are very bright, ambitious, talented and keen on creating a better life for themselves and their families.

In order for us to fund this program, we need supporters to contribute to this program so that we can make this a reality for the students. If you would like to see full details of the program, please view the one‐pager. This breaks down the costing that we are looking at for each candidate. Community Evolution is accepting contributions on behalf of the program and it is a fully registered Canadian charity based in Vancouver, British Columbia. All contributions are tax deductible for Canadian citizens. If you are interested in supporting this initiative, you can mail your contributions to:
