HOW TO APPLY

If you plan to take a specialty program, you may have to submit an additional application form. Scroll down the page for Specialty Program application forms.

Submit your application(s) to your chosen ILSC location by email, or in person. You can do this yourself, or through your local education agent.
Once ILSC has received your application(s), you will receive an invoice and banking information to arrange your payment.  Submit your fees to ILSC and you will receive your letter of acceptance.
If you need a visa or study permit to attend ILSC, now is the time to apply. You should also coordinate medical insurance to cover the duration of your stay: see the Visas and Insurance section for more info.

Book your flight and we'll see you soon at ILSC!

For the best experience, we recommend that you start your studies on one of our session start dates, but you can start any Monday during most of the year. The minimum age for general studies and most specialty programs is 16 at the start of studies.

SPECIALTY PROGRAM APPLICATION FORMS:

ILSC's specialty programs may have specific start date requirements. Review your specialty application form for more details.

VISAS & MEDICAL INSURANCE

ILSC provides general information about visa requirements in our country of study; however, this information is subject to change, and is determined by the designated government bodies in each country.  For the most accurate and up to date visa information, please visit the links listed, or contact ILSC.

ILSC recommends that all students have valid medical insurance to cover them for the duration of their stay. In some locations, medical insurance coverage is a requirement for securing your visa.

Canada Visas

You can find out if you need a visa, and what type of visa you need, using the government of Canada’s "Come to Canada Wizard.”  General visa information follows.

Visitor Visa (Temporary Resident Visa)

International students who wish to study in Canada for up to 6 months may need a Visitor Visa depending on the country for which they hold a passport. Please check the list of Countries and Territories Whose Citizens Require Visas in order to enter Canada as visitors.

Study Permit

Students do not need a "Study Permit" for study programs that last 6 months or less.

If you plan to study in Canada for longer than 6 months, you must obtain a Study Permit and, for ILSC-Montréal applicants, a Certificate of Acceptance for Quebec (CAQ.) These are available through your local Canadian Embassy.

Students may apply for a Study Permit even if they are going to study for 6 months or less. If students are coming for less than 6 months and are thinking of possibly extending their studies to more than 6 months, they should apply for a Study Permit in their home country. Students can extend their Study Permit from within Canada, but they cannot get a Study Permit from within Canada.

Students will need to include the DLI* number for their chosen ILSC Language Schools location when applying for their study permit:

 ILSC-Vancouver DLI: O19275396842

 ILSC-Toronto DLI: O19375697742

 ILSC-Montréal Temporary DLI: O19495718351

*Designated Learning Institution

Canada Medical Insurance

British Columbia (ILSC–Vancouver campus)

Please obtain private medical insurance for your first six months. You can purchase medical insurance through ILSC, please contact us for details.

Ontario and Quebec (ILSC–Toronto and ILSC–Montréal campuses)

Please obtain private medical insurance before your arrival. Provincial medical plans do not cover international students. You can purchase medical insurance through ILSC, please contact us for details.

USA Visas

You can find out if you need a visa, and what type of visa you need by visiting your nearest US Embassy or Consulate. General visa information follows.

Visitor Visa

The visitor visa is a non-immigrant visa for foreign citizens desiring to enter the United States temporarily for business (B-1), or for pleasure or medical treatment (B-2).

If you are entering the United States primarily for tourism, but want to take a short course of study of less than 18 hours per week (Full-time schedule at ILSC), you may be able to do so with a visitor visa. If your course of study is more than 18 hours a week, you will need a student visa.

Information about Visitor Visas from the U.S. Department of State

Programs available to Students with Visitor Visas

Student Visa

The F-1 student visa is a non-immigrant visa for foreign citizens whose primary purpose of entering the United States is to study. Students enrolling in one of the following schedules at ILSC must obtain an F-1 student visa: 'Full-Time Plus' or 'Full-Time Intensive'. Students applying for an F-1 student visa need to obtain a SEVIS* generated I-20 form from ILSC.

In order to receive an I-20 form, please submit the following documents to ILSC along with your application:

  • Financial proof of sufficient funds to cover tuition and living expenses for the duration of your studies (= the total tuition of your program plus $1300/month for living expenses)
  • A copy of your passport

The U.S. Department of State encourages students to apply for their visa as soon as they are prepared to do so to provide ample time for visa processing. First time student visa applicants are, in most countries, required to appear for an in-person interview. However, each embassy and consulate sets its own interview policies and procedures regarding student visas. Students should consult Embassy web sites or call for specific application instructions.

*SEVIS is a system that maintains accurate and current information on non-immigrant students from the time a school issues an I-20 form for them. SEVIS enables schools to transmit mandatory information and event notifications via the internet to the Department of Homeland Security and Department of State throughout a student’s stay in the United States.

Information about Student Visas from the U.S. Department of State

Courses & Programs Available to Students with Student Visas include the University Pathway Program and any Full-Time Plus or Full-Time Intensive program.

Visa Waiver Program

Foreign citizens coming to the U.S. for tourism or business for 90 days or less from qualified countries may be eligible to visit the U.S. without a visa and study less than 18 hours per week if they meet the visa waiver program requirements. Visit the U.S. Department of state Visa Waiver Program site to see if your country qualifies.

Information about the Visa Waiver Program from the U.S. Department of State

USA Medical Insurance

ILSC–San Francisco and ILSC–New York

Upon arrival, all ILSC students must show proof of valid medical insurance for their entire term at ILSC. Medical Insurance should be adequate to cover US medical costs.

Students may acquire insurance from their own country through their agency, or on their own.

Australia Visas

All students planning to study at ILSC-Australia will require an appropriate visa. The following is general information. Visa regulations are determined by the Immigration Department in Australia and are subject to change. Please verify visa information with the nearest Australian Embassy or Consulate. Please refer to the following website to determine what type of visa you will need to study at ILSC-Australia: Visa Options.

Student Visa

Students applying for a Student Visa must be enrolled for Full-Time study and submit an electronic confirmation of enrollment from the school, along with the appropriate visa paperwork. On approval from Australian immigration a Student Visa will be issued for the duration of your studies, and allows students to get permission to work 20 hours a week, with some restrictions.

Working Holiday Visa

Students who apply for and receive a Working Holiday Visa can study for up to 17 weeks and can work full-time for a maximum of 6 months for one employer. Students on this visa are responsible for arranging their own heath and travel insurance.

Other Visas

There are other visas that may allow study options as part of their conditions. Please check with the immigration link above or with the closest Embassy or Consulate. However, students with focused long term study needs should come on a Student Visa.

Australia Medical Insurance

ILSC–Sydney and ILSC–Brisbane

Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is a compulsory requirement for a student visa. ILSC can arrange the purchase of OSHC for all students enrolled at our school. Visit www.medibank.com.au for more information.

New Delhi Visas

The length and type of visa available to you will vary depending on your country of citizenship.

Please check with your local Indian embassy or consulate for current information about visa applications, or contact inquiry[at]ilsc[dot]in for assistance.

New Delhi Medical Insurance

ILSC highly recommends that students acquire travel health coverage for the duration of their stay in India.

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

ILSC has policies and procedures in place to help ensure our students have the best possible experience while at ILSC. Chose your study location to see the policies that apply to you.

Canada Policies and Procedures

English/French Only

We have an English/French Only Policy in the school. This means that whenever you are in the school you must speak English or French (whichever language you are studying.)

If ILSC students are not speaking English/French (their language of study) in the school the following rules apply:

  • First offence: The student will be given a written warning.
  • Second offence: The student will be suspended from school for 1 day.
  • Third offence: The student will be suspended from school for 3 days.
  • Fourth offence: The student will be suspended from school for one week, and, if applicable, a letter will be sent to their agent and/or parents.

In the event of a suspension, students are not permitted anywhere on the school premises.

Lateness & Absenteeism

Students are expected to attend class regularly. They must attend 80% of their classes each session as part of the requirement to receive a credit for each course taken. If a student is absent for more than 20% of the overall study period, they will not receive the official ILSC certificate.

All students are expected to be on time to classes.

Attendance, punctuality and participation are important parts of learning.

  • Students who come to class every day learn more English.
  • Students who come to class on time don’t miss important parts of the lesson.
  • Students who come to class on time join with the other students and the teacher in getting the class off to a good start.

Penalties will apply to those who arrive late:

  • If a student arrives between 1 and 15 minutes late for class, 15 minutes will be deducted.
  • If a student arrives later than 15 minutes after the class start time, the student may either be allowed to enter the class quietly or asked to return after the break. 90 minutes will be deducted.
  • If a student leaves or arrives at the break, 90 minutes will be deducted.
  • If a student develops a habit of being late or skipping classes, he/she may be referred for counselling.
  • Students who arrive late are expected to catch up on what they missed. If a student requires additional information to catch up, he/she should request it from the teacher at an appropriate, non-intrusive time.

Authorized Break and Leave of Absence

An Authorized Break does not exceed four weeks and is a postponement of studies where the student does not forfeit any tuition. A student must have completed 12 weeks of study before they can request an Authorized Break and the student must have a valid Visa.

A Leave of Absence does not exceed two weeks and the student forfeits the tuition and corresponding study time.

Upon returning from an Authorized Break or a Leave of Absence, we will try to place students in the same classes they were in previously but this may not always be possible if the classes are full.

Dispute Resolution Policy

ILSC students can talk about difficulties with their teachers, Counsellors/Liaisons and/or Administration. If no satisfactory solution is found, students need to follow formal procedures including presenting the problem in writing to the School Director, who will, in writing, address and resolve the dispute. In case such disputes are not resolved to the students' satisfaction, students have the right to appeal the decision in writing to Languages Canada.

Dismissal

ILSC students must keep good attendance and attend at least 80% of their classes. They must speak only English (or English/French at ILSC-Montréal) when on school premises. If these expectations are not met, students will receive counselling. After appropriate warnings, students will be expelled. Likewise, if a student’s behavior is inappropriate by the school’s standards, the above procedures will be followed.

Class Change

Students can request a class change on the Thursday of their first week at ILSC. Program Directors are available to discuss academic challenges that students may face with their courses.

If you cancel in writing before your program starts, you will receive a refund of the following percentage of your tuition fees:

  • Less than 7 days after your registration is submitted and before the program start date: the greater of either 75% of the total fees due or total fees minus $400
  • 30 days or more before the program start date: 75% of the total fees due
  • Less than 30 days before the program start date: 60% of the total fees due

  • Less than 10% of program completed: 50% of total fees
  • 10-30% of program completed: 30% of total fees

Specialty programs are not transferrable to core programs. If you change your program from a specialty program to a core program, you have to cancel the specialty program and re-apply for the core program.

If you are eligible for a refund under the conditions above, you will receive the refund within 30 days of ILSC receiving written notice of cancellation or ILSC's notice to you of dismissal.

Lateness, Early Departure, and Absenteeism

Students are expected to attend class regularly and are expected to be on time to class. Students need to attend 80% of their classes each session as part of the requirement to receive a credit for each course taken.

Students arriving between 1-15 minutes late to class will be marked late. If a student has been late four times for one class it will equal one absence.

Students arriving more than 15 minutes late for class will be marked absent.

Students leaving the classroom more than 30 minutes before the end of class will be marked absent.

Students leaving the class 30 minutes (or less) before the end of class will be marked ‘D’ for Early Departure.

2 early departures = 1 absence.

Note: if your total attendance is below 80%, you will not receive a Certificate of Completion.

Class Change

Students can request a class change on the Thursday of their first week at ILSC. Program Directors are available to discuss academic challenges that students may face with their courses.

Dispute Resolution Procedure

ILSC encourages its students to talk freely about their lives and experiences in the school and in the city. Comments about the school’s program help everyone to learn and become better. Students should share any difficulties or challenges they are facing. The teachers, student counselors and school administrators are available to listen to and guide students. If a student has a difficulty with the school itself, which cannot be corrected through discussion, then the student can present his/her concern in writing to the school director, who will, in discussion and in writing, address and resolve the dispute.

At our San Francisco school:

  • Any questions a student may have regarding their enrollment that have not been satisfactorily answered by the institution may be directed to the Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education at P.O. Box 980818 West Sacramento, CA 95798-0818, www.bppe.ca.gov by phone (888) 370-7589 or by fax (916) 263-1897.
  • A student or any member of the public may file a complaint about this institution with the Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education by calling (888) 370-7589, by completing a complaint form, which can be obtained on the bureau's Internet Web site www.bppe.ca.gov.

Academic Progress Policy

Your academic progress is important to us! ILSC teaches 10 levels of English. On your first day at ILSC, you will receive an Assessment Test (Reading/Writing/Listening/Speaking), which will help you to identify your level of proficiency. The Assessment Test will help you choose the appropriate classes. Our core courses (Academic and Test Preparation/ Communication and/or Business) are 70 hours per session (1 session = 20 days x 3.5 hours per day). Most students will complete an academic level within 8 - 12 weeks (anywhere between 140 - 210 classroom hours).

Remember that Authorized Breaks, Leaves of Absence, and Vacations may affect your progress and may lengthen the amount of time needed for you to move to a higher level of English.

  • An Authorized Break is a postponement of studies that does not exceed 4 weeks and where the student does not forfeit any tuition. A student must have a valid visa and must have completed 12 weeks of study before they can request an Authorized Break.
  • During a Leave of Absence, which is not to exceed 2 weeks, the student forfeits the tuition and the corresponding study time.

A cumulative measure of student progress (measured by performance in every class + overall performance) will result in either a letter grade (A, B, C) or a mark of “Unsatisfactory Academic Performance” (UAP). This grade is recorded on the Letter of Enrollment that students are to receive at the end of their studies. In order to obtain a Certificate of Completion at the end of their studies, students are required to have received both a minimum of an 80% for their overall attendance [F1 student visa holders may be reported to the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) if their attendance does not meet this standard] and a minimum average of a C- for their overall class performance.

Throughout every 4-week session, teachers will assess and record your progress, help you choose classes at your level or a new level that suits your needs and interests, and will recommend more assistance and/or academic counseling as necessary.

There are three main ways that ILSC monitors your progress:

1. Academic Performance: All courses have specific assessment requirements that match the course objectives. Students must have good class participation and must successfully complete assessment tasks in order to maintain academic achievement. At the end of your course, your teacher (you must study at least 2 weeks with the same teacher) will record your academic performance on a Student Progress Report. Successful completion of the course means:

  1. An overall grade of A, B or C
  2. No more than one Did Not Complete (DNC)

Students performing below these standards will be asked to attend academic counseling with the Academic Program Director. Academic counseling will also be recommended to those students whose level of English does not improve within 3 sessions. Academic counseling allows both the academic team and the student to identify any challenges, resolve any problems, etc.

2. Attendance: Students must attend at least 80% of their course to receive their Student Progress Report. Students who have missed 3 classes will be referred to the Academic Program Director and/or their Student Counselor for counseling and a reminder of this policy.

3. Personal Conduct: ILSC Staff and Students treat each other with respect. To ensure a safe and comfortable study environment for everyone, students must follow the Student Contract and the Academic Integrity Policy. Students whose behavior does not meet these standards will be asked to attend counseling with their Student Counselor and/or the Academic Program Director.

Students that do not make satisfactory academic progress (for example, spending more than 12 weeks at the same academic level) will receive a warning. The warning process has two stages:

  • First, students will meet with the Academic Program Director to create an academic improvement plan lasting one session (4 weeks) and designed to help them to complete the academic level. This may include a schedule of regular meetings with teachers, counselors, the Academic Program Director, etc.
  • At a review at the end of the session, if the student fails to meet the objectives of the academic improvement plan and does not complete the level, the student’s Counselor and the Academic Program Director will help the student to find a new learning environment that better suits their academic needs.

Students are able to appeal the determination that he or she is not meeting the Satisfactory Progress standards. To do this, they must write a letter to the Academic Program Director and the School Director at any time before the end of the 4-week probationary period that: (1) makes the appeal, (2) includes any documentation as appropriate, and (3) requests ILSC’s decision within 1 week.

Refund Policy ILSC-San Francisco

To receive a refund of any portion of tuition fees, you must give ILSC written notice that you intend to withdraw from the program in which you have enrolled. If your Study Permit or Visa is denied, or you cancel before your program start date, ILSC will retain the $100 non-refundable Registration Fee and if applicable, the $95 Accommodation Registration Fee. If you cancel in writing after your program starts or are dismissed from ILSC for just cause after your program starts, you will be refunded the following proportion of your tuition fees:

  • If notice of cancellation is made through attendance at the first class session, or the seventh day after enrollment, (whichever is later): ILSC shall refund 100% of the amount paid for institutional charges, less the application fee and homestay placement fee, not to exceed two hundred and fifty dollars ($250)
  • If you have completed 60% or less of the period of attendance, ILSC shall refund 100% of unused tuition
  • If you complete more than 60% of your program, ILSC shall NOT refund any portion of tuition.
  • Refunds will be based on recalculated weekly tuition rates according to total number of weeks actually studied.
  • If you booked your course through an agent your refund may differ from the below based on your agreement with that agency. Please verify your refund agreement with your agent.

Change of schedules is considered the same as cancellation. For example, for a schedule change Full-Time Intensive Premium (32 lessons/week) to Full-Time Intensive (28 lessons/week), you will have to cancel the whole program and re-apply for the Full-Time program. Monetary charges as indicated above will apply. Please note that you are NOT able to change schedules that lead to a status change unless you have first officially changed status in the U.S.

Specialty programs are not transferrable to core programs. If you change your program from a specialty program to a core program, you have to cancel the specialty program and re-apply for the core program.

If you are eligible for a refund under the conditions above, you will receive the refund within 45 days of ILSC receiving written notice of cancellation or ILSC's notice to you of dismissal.

Note: Program is defined as whatever length of time a student registers for.

  • For courses longer than 4 weeks, students who terminate in the first 4 weeks will be refunded all tuition fees except for 4 weeks calculated at the regular (non-discounted**) rate.
  • For courses longer than 4 weeks, students whose withdrawal occurs after the first 4 weeks but before they have completed 50% of their course, the school will retain a pro-rated amount of tuition at the regular (non-discounted) rate.
  • For students who cancel their course after they have completed 50% of their course, the school will retain all tuition fees.

Change of schedules is considered the same as cancellation. Australia Policies and Procedures

The Education Services for Overseas Students Act 2000 (ESOS Act) and related legislation is designed to protect the interests of students coming to Australia on student visas.

The ESOS Framework

English Only

We have an English Only Policy in the school for our daytime students. This means that whenever you are in the school you must speak English.

If ILSC students are not speaking English in the school the following rules apply:

  • First offence: The student will be given a written warning.
  • Second offence: The student will be suspended from school for 1 day.
  • Third offence: The student will be suspended from school for 3 days.
  • Fourth offence: The student will be suspended from school for one week, and, if applicable, a letter will be sent to their agent and/or parents.

In the event of a suspension, students are not permitted anywhere on the school premises.

Lateness and Absenteeism

Students are expected to be on time to classes. If a student has been late four times for one class it will equal one absence.

Students are expected to attend class regularly. Students need to attend 80% of their classes each session, as part of the requirement to receive a credit for each course taken.

Note: if your total attendance is below 80%, you will not receive a Certificate of Completion.

Dismissal Policy

Students must keep good attendance and attend at least 80% of their classes. Students must speak only English when on school premises. If these expectations are not met, students may receive counselling. Then, after appropriate warnings, students will be expelled. Likewise, if a student's behavior is deemed inappropriate, the above procedures will be followed.

Dispute Resolution Procedure

ILSC encourages its students to talk freely about their lives and experiences in the school and in Australia.

• This agreement does not remove the right to take action under Australia’s consumer protection laws.

• ILSC’s dispute resolution process does not circumscribe your rights to pursue other avenues and other legal remedies.

• We aim to have a solution presented to you within seven days.

• If it is not possible to resolve the dispute internally, via the process above, you may choose to contact the Overseas Student Ombudsman. If you wish to lodge an external appeal or complain about this decision, you can contact the Overseas Student Ombudsman. The Overseas Student Ombudsman offers a free and independent service for overseas students who have a complaint or want to lodge an external appeal about a decision made by their private education or training provider. See the Overseas Student Ombudsman website www.oso.gov.au or phone 1-300-362-072 within Australia for more information.

India Policies and Procedures

Authorized Break and Leave of Absence

An Authorized Break does not exceed four weeks and is a postponement of studies where the student does not forfeit any tuition. A student must have completed 4 weeks of study before they can request an Authorized Break of a maximum of one week. After 12 consecutive weeks of study, a student may request an Authorized break of up to 4 weeks. The student must have a valid Visa that would cover all breaks.

A Leave of Absence does not exceed two weeks and the student forfeits the tuition and corresponding study time.

Upon returning from an Authorized Break or a Leave of Absence, we will try to place students in the same classes they were in previously but this may not always be possible if the classes are full.

Dismissal Policy

Students must keep good attendance and attend at least 80% of their classes. Students must speak only English or French (their language of study) when on school premises. If these expectations are not met, students may receive counselling. Then, after appropriate warnings, students will be expelled. Likewise, if a student's behavior is deemed inappropriate, the above procedures will be followed.

Dispute Resolution Procedure

ILSC students can talk about difficulties with their teachers, Counsellors/Liaisons and/or Administration. If no satisfactory solution is found, students need to follow formal procedures including presenting the problem in writing to the School Director, who will, in writing, address and resolve the dispute.

Class Change

Students can request a class change on the Thursday of their first week at ILSC. Program Directors are available to discuss academic challenges that students may face with their courses.

ILSC-New Delhi Refund Policy

To receive a refund of any portion of tuition fees, you must give ILSC written notice that you intend to withdraw from the program in which you have enrolled. If your Study Permit or Visa is denied, ILSC will retain the lesser of 25% of the total tuition fees due or $200 and, if applicable, the $90 Accommodation Registration Fee.

If you cancel in writing or are dismissed from ILSC after your program starts, you will be refunded the following percentage of your tuition fees:

  • Less than 10% of program completed: 50% of total fees
  • 10-30% of program completed: 30% of total fees
  • More than 30% of program completed: 0% (no refund)

Refund percentages are calculated based on the entire program length, not session by session.

Change of schedules is considered the same as cancellation. i.e. for a schedule change of Intensive (30 lessons/week) to Part-Time (24 lessons/week), students will have to cancel the whole program and re-apply for the Part-Time program.

If you are eligible for a refund under the conditions above, you will receive the refund within 30 days of ILSC receiving written notice of cancellation or ILSC's notice to you of dismissal.
